iPhone app: Ride the City - NYC

Posted in

Ever since we launched Ride the City, we've been getting requests for a mobile version of the application. Well, here it is: Link to iTunes Preview. The app costs $1.99 and is available for New York City; we will be rolling out apps for the other cities soon.

The app gives you most of the great functionality of the web application but in a pocket-sized, location-aware package (it also works on the iPod touch and iPad). Key features of the Ride the City - NYC iPhone app include:

  • As on the website, the iPhone app steers you toward routes that maximize the use of bike lanes, bike paths, greenways, and other bike-friendly streets. Routes avoid high-traffic streets and steep climbs.
  • You can select your preferred route sensitivity: direct, safe, or safer. Or you can change them on the fly.
  • The directions are displayed on the map with an easy-to-read scrollable screen – perfect for double-checking your trip when taking a break.
  • Find the nearest bike shops (and get directions to one) with just one touch.
  • We've placed a Report an Error button prominently on the map so you can provide instant feedback to report a mistake on the map or to suggest a better way around.
  • As on the website, Ride the City utilizes a CloudMade basemap that is sourced from OpenStreetMap, the volunteer community mapping project that is making a free map of the world.

This app might never have happened without our good friends at Door3, who were committed to this project from the beginning, and fun to work with. Pete, Jackson, Ryan, JT, Francesca, thank you!

We'd also like to say that that this is version 1.0. Look forward to a steady stream of improvements and enhancements over time! If you find problems of your own or if you have suggestions for future functionality that you'd like to see, please let us know.

Finally, if you find the app useful, please consider rating it. Thanks!

Is there a page with

chrismcnally's picture

Is there a page with instructions? I used it this weekend on a complex trip, they key points were 1) where is the entrance to the Triboro/RFK bridge bike lane in Queens and 2) i had to come down on Wards Island, cross the island and then 3) take the Bronx Bridge path over to the Bronx. It routed me perfectly.

I wonder if i just don't know how to use it? but I had to make a phone call, so i had to exit the app and when I came back in I had to enter my route all over again. Is there a way to save that?

Hey Chris, I'm glad the route

Hey Chris,

I'm glad the route worked well for you. What a beautiful weekend to take the RFK Bridge!

We're aware of the issue with needing to re-enter your route after navigating away from it. That will be included in a not-too-distant-future update.

Thanks!

Hey guys, love the app, we reblogged it over at brooklyn365.com - I've used your site for directions on the web before, the day iPhone comes to Verizon (soon, very soon) I'll be a loyal customer!

Can we get something like

Can we get something like hopstop.com that you can text it 2 locations and then get text directions back?

Then it's usable by all, and not just iPhone-folks.

Like the app, but I have three suggestions: Make it so the search field remembers previous entries as you type so you don't have to keep entering the same thing; allow you to save addresses as favorites; allow you to e-mail or copy directions to make them easier to access when you're on the bike.
Thanks.

Yes, pleas app for android!

Hi, All, My Motorola Droid

Hi, All,

My Motorola Droid (an Android phone) has directions via bicycle in its (already-included) Google Maps app, so perhaps that makes a need for RideTheCity there moot?

We were just biking over by Plumb Beach a few weeks ago and the restoration was in progress. I found this article about it: http://www.sheepsheadbites.com/2010/05/plumb-beach-bike-path-prepped-for-reconstruction/

Anyone else have details, ETA, etc?

I still like the Direct,

I still like the Direct, Safe, Safer option a lot. So I prefer RideTheCity. Especially if I'm going to an unfamiliar part of town. So I think a droid app would still be cool.
